2Fair computer, bad preparation of sender
By dw817
This is a review for the computer I bought at EZBuycafe.

The front panel beneath the DVD drive was punched out and inside the computer itself. I knew something was wrong when I took the computer out of the bubble tape and it was rattling inside. I had to remove the cover on the side of the computer, locate it, and guiding my hands around the DVD drive, manually punch it back in place.

As for the back, it was missing one of the waffle-covers completely. Nowhere located in the box it arrived in or anywhere else. I can purchase one of these myself but it shouldn't be missing any at all ! Currently I cut out a piece of thick envelope paper and taped it over the area so dust won't get in.

The computer also arrived in massive bubble tape, but that only further led me to believe it was damaged before it arrived and not the part of the fed ex people and since the box was in perfect condition arriving, no dents or anything.

This computer also had a 3 & 1/2 inch drive ! I'm not sure if that's a benefit or a tribute to just how old this computer is. I'm a little concerned that I got the right computer as it is not shown on the illustration nor mentioned in the description.

THERE ARE NO ROUND CONNECTORS FOR YOUR MOUSE OR KEYBOARD. Only 6-USB plugs in the back. If your mouse or keyboard uses a round connector, you cannot use it with this computer at all ! Fortunately I pulled out one of my USB keyboards out of storage or I wouldn't have been able to use this computer without buying one.

Always check to make sure the computer you are getting has these since apparently it isn't required to include in the description !

The computer itself upon booting did not immediately recognize my mouse or keyboard, despite being USB. I had no interface !

I was patient though, and fortunately after leaving it for 3-minutes unattended as I made some breakfast, suddenly it clicked to life and said it is locating new hardware. After about 10-minutes more it finally found my keyboard, mouse, modem, and 3 external 1TB drives, so the operating system does work pretty good, considering.

The computer is fast, granted, but it also started to overheat when I gave it an encoding process that sent it to 100% ! I checked this with SPEEDFAN. It said the fan wasn't blowing !

So I had a box-fan blowing on the back of it now and used SPEEDFAN software to monitor it.

2-days later the fan finally kicked on inside. It doesn't overheat now.

No Restore DISC was also found inside the DVD drive or inside the packaging either, despite being listed as included in the description.

Running it through AUSLOGICS it said there are errors in the physical hard-drive. Hmm ... Worse to worse.

On the plus side, it is fast and a dual processor, the operating system on it seems to have stabilized now, and it did burn one DVD. It's not fast enough to screen record, unfortunately, which was another thing I wanted.

This is a fair computer for a fair price that may arrive to you missing pieces, damaged, or not including necessary software like mine did.

You always need to be careful when you make an ONLINE purchase and ALWAYS contact the company if it arrives to you with problems.

...

Well, I did contact EZBuyCafe the first day after I received the computer and tallied all the problems and they were sympathetic to my cause and that's good.

A week or so later they sent me the two items that were missing from the shipment, the Restore Disk and the metal waffle piece for the back of it so dust won't get in it and I appreciate them coming through on these absent articles.

I changed my review from 2-stars to 3-stars for EZBuyCafe following through and fixing their shipping mistake.

Nice job guys.

The soundcard stopped working a week ago. I brought up the drivers to see there were a lot of yellow "!" marks, and one was on the sound-card as well.

I backed up my work to an external 1TB drive. I was ready to re-format this computer entirely.

So I used the 'RESCUE' disk provided by EZBuyCafe, and that included a COLD ZERO FORMAT (I was ready for it), and despite having a completely clean computer, after re-installing XP with their own DISC, I had WORSE results !

ALL my drivers then had yellow "!" on them then and of course, my sound-card wasn't repaired in addition to the 'repair' removing my graphic and internet drivers as well !

The computer was running in VGA at 640x480 resolution now with no way to change it !

I was at wit's end ! I told my friend Chris we're gonna return this computer but he said when you return anything there is a re-stocking fee and I'd have to pay for S&H.

He said, I know a bit about hardware and despite all the hardware problems that are appearing in this computer, he doubts company would knowingly send out a computer that exhibited as many problems as this one appeared to have, so let me see what I can do.

So after several hours of hard work on both his part and my part, opening up the casing on the computer, using a pen-flashlight, and writing down the names of the cards inside and manually downloading the drivers from my other working computer and transferring those then over to a thumb-drive and manually installing those on the EZBuyCafe computer, it has been repaired completely and totally.

And curiously, runs better than when it first arrived. It can screen-record at the speed I like now.

The internal DVD burner, oddly, will only read CDs now and won't read or write DVDs. Fortunately I have an external burner to compensate and Chris said we can go out and buy another DVD drive and remove the bad one if I like.

I would recommend EZBuyCafe for their hardware (despite still sending me a different computer than the one described), but as far as the installation of the O/S and the 'Repair' DISC they sent later, I am more than displeased, and likely that is the cause of the DVD drive giving out entirely.

If I didn't have a friend knowledgeable in computer hardware, I really would've been out of luck with no computer at all !

EZBuyCafe, please spend more time on sending out the CORRECT software to repair user problems and ensure there are NO yellow '!' when you send out a computer initially as this will always eventually cause it to exhibit signs of hardware failure.

Two stars.
